Eugene Polley, the man who invented the wireless TV remote, died on May 20 of natural causes at the age of 96, according to Deadline. Polley, an engineer, developed the gun-shaped Zenith Flash-Matic wireless remote control in 1955, which allowed television viewers to change the channel without having to stand up and turn the dial.

This invention revolutionized the way people watched TV, and later that design evolved into remotes for computers, video games, VCRs, DVD players, and countless other household items. In 1997, Polley was awarded with an Emmy for his work in TV remotes. It’s an invention that so many of us have taken for granted over the years, so it’s only proper that we recognize the man that dreamed it up.

Tia Mowry Leaving BET’s The Game – UsMagazine.com

It’s Game over for actress Tia Mowry.

Featured as Melanie Barnett-Davis on BET’s popular series The Game for the past six years, Mowry has confirmed that she will not be returning for its next season.

“Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to The Game for season 6. It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun,” the star, 33, confirmed via Twitter Tuesday, explaining that she’ll use her time to pursue other projects, including an ABC Family movie.

Mowry has appeared on the show since its premiere in 2006. Costarring Wendy Raquel Robinson and Pooch Hall, The Game aired on The CW from 2006 to 2009 before BET picked it up in 2011.

Though she’s saying goodbye to BET’s primetime audience, Mowry — who split her time filming the series in Atlanta and with her husband and son in Los Angeles — has no plans to stop appearing on TV entirely.

Tia & Tamera, the STYLE network show on which she stars with her twin sister, premieres its second season June 11.

Mowry released a pregnancy advice book, Oh Baby, on Tuesday. She and her husband, Cory Hardrict, welcomed their son Cree in June 2011.

I don’t know whose gonna replace Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry because they are so amazing. After the fifth season of The Game over I won’t be watching the next season. I’m going to miss Derwin and Melanie the best TV couple on earth. I hope that BET gonna cancel the show when the ratings go down. Will you be watching the next season of The Game?

Robin Gibb Dead at 62 – UsMagazine.com

The music world lost one of its greats Sunday.

“The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery,” a rep tells Us Weekly in a statement. “The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Gibb, 62, was put in a coma after contracting pneumonia in April. In 2010, the tenor had emergency surgery for a blocked bowel and then had an additional operation for a twisted bowel; he also had intestinal surgery on March 26, 2012 to remove a “blood clot that caused perforation.”

Robin’s twin brother, Maurice, died in 2003 at the age of 53 due to complications from a twisted intestine. Their younger brother, Andy, died in 1988 at age 30 of a heart ailment.

The Bee Gees’ soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever was one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s. They have won seven Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Donna Summer Dies at 63 – UsMagazine.com

The Queen of Disco is gone.

Donna Summer has died at age 63, her family confirmed to the Associated Press on Thursday.

“Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith,” the statement begins. “While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

The chart-topping, Grammy-winning singer behind such colossal disco hits as “Hot Stuff,” “Last Dance,” “Bad Girls” and many others — plus 80s smashes like “She Works Hard for the Money” — passed away in Florida after a battle with cancer.

The biggest, most enduring star of the disco era, Summer helped usher disco, dance and later electronic music into the mainstream — influencing the careers and sounds of Madonna, Beyonce, Michael Jackson and countless others.

She is survived by daughters Brooklyn and Amanda, her grown daughters with husband Bruce Sudano, a fellow musician whom she married in 1980, and Mimi, her eldest daughter with first husband, actor Helmuth Sommer.

Summer’s rep had no immediate comment. According to TMZ, Summer had been working on a new album weeks before her passing.

Born to a devoutly Christian family in the Dorchester section of Boston, Summer’s racy music — her breakout hit “Love to Love You, Baby” featured orgasmic moans — often conflicted with the star’s spiritual beliefs. The mezzo-soprano (whose most famous collaborator was producer Giorgio Morodo, who helped create the groundbreaking track “I Feel Love”) declared herself a born-again Christian in 1979.

After a long absence from live performing, Summer returned to the stage in the early 2000s, and re-recorded “Love to Love You Baby” in 2011 for a “Loverdose” fragrance ad for Diesel.

A five-time Grammy winner, Summer became the first artist ever to score three back-to-back number 1 albums. She was nominated (but not chosen) for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

NBC Also Renewed “Whitney” For Some Reason | Complex

With every good tidbit of news – Community, Parks and Recreation renewed! – there must also be some bad. In this case, it’s the fact that NBC also decided to renew Whitney. The sitcom, created by series star Whitney Cummings herself, was considered on the bubble for a while, and most thought it was as good as dead. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

In addition to the renewal of Whitney meaning there will be another season of Whitney on the airwaves, it also means that Cummings will have three shows on television next season: Whitney, 2 Broke Girls (for which she is a co-creator), and her new E! talk show, Love You, Mean It With Whitney Cummings. She will have three, and the rest of us…will have none.
