Three days after a judge set his bail at $150,000, George Zimmerman was released from a Florida jail at midnight on Monday (April 23). The neighborhood watch volunteer charged with murder in the February shooting of teen Trayvon Martin left the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford, Florida, in the middle of the night and was whisked away without speaking to reporters, according to CNN.
Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder on April11, nearly two months after he shot and killed Martin in what he claims was self-defense. Martin’s February 26 death sent shockwaves through the nation. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, saw 17-year-old Trayvon walking through his gated community in Sanford, Florida, and said he immediately grew suspicious, of the teen, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. It was the hoodie that gunman Zimmerman told police made the 17-year-old appear suspicious and in support of Martin, demonstrators have donned hoodies as a show of solidarity.
When Zimmerman, 28, called 911, police dispatchers advised him not to pursue Martin. By the time police arrived on the scene, Martin was shot dead and Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense, was not arrested or charged with a crime. Trayvon didn’t have a weapon and Zimmerman’s lawyers have said their client was adhering to Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which allows someone who reasonably believes force is necessary to protect themselves using a weapon.
Zimmerman’s family needed to raise at least $15,000 to secure his release from jail. At a bail hearing on Friday Zimmerman apologized to Martin’s family in his first public comments on the incident. “I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son,” he said in a direct appeal to Martin’s family. “I thought he was a little bit younger than I was, and I did not know if he was armed or not.”
Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, said that his client’s apology was a response to a recent interview by Martin’s mother, who said she wanted to hear from the man who shot her son. “He didn’t want to defend himself, he didn’t want to discuss the facts of the case,” O’Mara said. “He heard the request of the family, and he wanted to respond to it.” A family friend told CNN that Martin’s parents were “completely devastated” over the judge’s decision to allow Zimmerman to post bond. Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda had argued for a higher bond total closer to $1 million, citing prior run-ins with a police officer and a woman who named Zimmerman in a domestic violence injunction.
Though O’Mara has said he is concerned about Zimmerman’s safety given the outcry in the case, no decision has been made yet on whether his client will be allowed to leave Florida as he awaits trial. Zimmerman was fitted with an electronic monitoring device before his release.
The hip-hop community has been particularly vocal in their call for justice for the teen. ?uestlove, Game , Young Jeezy, Nas, Killer Mike and Prodigy all spoke out in protest, while rappers like Plies and Bad Boy’s Los made songs dedicated to Trayvon.

All samples cleared! TMZ reports that Jay-Z and Kanye West have settled a federal lawsuit in which soul singer Syl Johnson claimed that Jay and Kanye illegally lifted a portion of his 1967 record “Different Strokes” for “The Joy,” off of their Watch the Throne album.
“The Joy,” which was produced by Pete Rock with West, Mike Dean and Jeff Bhasker listed as co-producers, first surfaced in 2010 as a free digital download as part of Yeezy’s G.O.O.D. Fridays viral campaign.
The suit claimed that ‘Ye attempted to clear the “Different Strokes” sample for his Grammy Award-winning My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but couldn’t get the necessary agreement in place before releasing his LP.
The song was later included as a bonus track on the deluxe version of Kanye and Jay’s tag-team Watch the Throne LP, but the duo failed to clear the sample, according to Johnson. This isn’t the first time “Different Strokes” has been sampled in hip-hop before: Wu-Tang Clan (“Shame On a N—a”) and Public Enemy (“Fight the Power”) are among the most notable acts to use the record.
Johnson filed his complaint in Illinois federal court in October after archival record label and publisher the Numero Uno Group initially threatened a lawsuit on his behalf. The lawsuit was dismissed last week because the two sides have reached a settlement. No details on the agreement have been made available, however.

Drum roll please. According to MTV, Rick Ross has been crowned as this year’s Hottest MC In The Game Congrats to the Bawse.
Whether on his own singles (“You the Boss,” “I Love My Bitches”) or on tracks that he was featured on, the M-I-Yayo MC turned in multiple unforgettable performances. “Ima Boss” was technically Meek’s song, but the casual listener may have missed that fact.

With the release of one of the best albums of the past year with Take Care, Drizzy comes in as the runner-up on this year’s list.
Drake’s dominance is well-documented, from SoundScan success to extraordinarily extensive radio play. As an artist, the Young Money standout blends R&B melody and alternative sensibilities with an MC’s bravado. While still spitting bars with some of the game’s most highly regarded lyricists, his emotive writing style made it acceptable for rappers to dish out their feelings (though Common might disagree).

With Jay-Z already coming in at number 6, it’s only right that Mr. West makes the list as well and he comes in at number 3.
“Jay-Z has really stood alone over the course of his career and he never really let somebody else get in the front,” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news, about the collaboration.

And the list continues to get interesting. Coming in at number 4 as 2012′s Hottest MC is Nicki Minaj.
As far as our Hottest MCs criteria, Nicki meets them all. Her impact is undeniable and, lyrically, she holds her own when she’s playing with the boys: She stole the show on Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)” remix and declared herself the Female Weezy on Birdman’s “Y.U.

Tonight, MTV2 gives us the rest of the list for Hottest MC In The Game. Starting off at number 5 is Mr. Carter. After having a pretty disappointing album, this is a questionable choice.
“Wayne had a strong year; almost a million in a week doesn’t lie,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent. “He’s definitely remained relevant for the whole year and once he came out, he hit the ground running.”
