Who you are and where you live will determine how you choose to celebrate the new year. There are too many countries and religions in the world to try an explain all of the different celebrations in this article. Instead, let’s limit the observances to those here at home. Would it be a fair statement to suggest most everyone in the United States will celebrate the passing of the old year and ushering in of the new?
Steps
Join the millions of people who will gather in Times Square to watch the Ball Drop or in Atlanta to watch the Peach Drop. These are events that live up to the national attention they garner. If you’re not close to these events, no problem. In many cities across the country people will meet and cheer the fireworks display and revel in a tradition originally designed to scare away evil spirits. Be sure you dress for the conditions.
Celebrate at home, alone or with friends or family members. Everyone sitting and staring intensely at the HDTV or old TV set with the rabbit ears will at least be warm and toasty. It doesn’t matter that you aren’t with a crowd, as long as the cable stays on, or the antennae doesn’t move when it’s close to midnight.
Attend a lavish party. Join the hundreds of thousands of other people who will dress in their best costumes to dance, eat, and toast with champagne. Then ceremoniously wait for that special moment to arrive. Wait with bated breath for your chance to use the crumpled mistletoe that was so hard to find at the last minute.
Do what millions have decided to do this year. Join the ranks of those whose numbers grow with each passing year as the world fights against despair and frustration. Choose to attend church services and observe the tradition of “Night Watch”. Become a part of the congregation and together with resounding voices harmoniously ring in the New Year with hope and prayers.
Remember our soldiers. Their celebrations must be heard, if not with our ears, then with our hearts. Those currently serving, those who have served, and those we must never forget – Thank you for a service well done.
Tips
For many, the smell of black-eyed peas will permeate the house, the club, or the dining area. People will wait patiently near the rice, greens, and cornbread. They wait until that magic moment when good luck, and good fortune will be awarded to those who partake.
Need we mention the resolutions? They will be made, and reiterated, and forgotten long before the new year ends.
At the stroke of midnight a resounding “Happy New Year” will echo throughout the land. Hugs and kisses, and congratulations will be exchanged. For some, a song whose words escape even those with the best of intentions will be misspoken – Auld Lang Syne.
FIRST VERSE: Should old acquaintance be forgot/And never brought to mind?/Should old acquaintance be forgot,/And auld lang syne? CHORUS:For auld lang syne, my dear,/For auld lang syne,/We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,/For auld lang syne!
Warnings
Is it possible for us to continue these thoughts of goodness and kindness throughout the coming year and pass those thoughts on throughout the world?
I pray we can, if not for us, then for our children…
On December 25, 2006, legendary soul singer James Brown passed away at the age of 73. He was the best singe of the world. He has some great dance moves, music and voice. His music was sampled by many artists including Public Enemy, Biz Markie, Kanye West and EPMD.
