Trevell “G. Dep” Coleman was found guilty of second degree murder on Tuesday (April 17) after a jury took two days to deliberate at the Supreme Criminal Court in Lower Manhattan, New York.
Coleman, dressed in a beige sweater and pants, remained composed as the verdict was delivered. His wife, Crystal Sutton, and other family members, including his mother, brother and cousins, were also in attendance and were equally stunned to hear the decision. Once the verdict was read, Coleman looked over his shoulders at his wife, who wore sunglasses as she exited the room moments later, hiding her tears. The trial took five days to complete.
During the first half of the day, the jury asked once again to review the evidence presented in the case, which included Coleman’s video-taped confession and the police’s homicide logs. G-Dep’s attorney, Anthony Ricco, continued to attempt to sway the jury that there wasn’t enough substantial evidence to tie his client to the death of victim John Henkel. His final arguments, however, weren’t enough to set Dep free. Coleman was found guilty under the felony murder law.
“They just could not get this story straight,” Ricco explained during his closing arguments. “Are we talking about the same event? I’m begging you to go into the jury room and use your common sense.”
It is unknown as of press time how much time Coleman will serve, but his attorney said it will not be surprising if the judge doesn’t give him the minimum 15-year sentence of the 15-years-to-life Coleman faces.
“Trevell is a very courageous person, very different of people from this era: he has a conscience and a heart,” Ricco told a group of reporters as he left the courtroom. “God doesn’t leave you in the deep water to drown and hopefully Trevell won’t drown.
“It’s probably one of the most powerful statements that a rappers has ever made and that’s to be accountable,” he added in reference to G-Dep coming clean to the crime years later.
Coleman is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, May 8

Mystikal is headed back to jail. The New Orleans rapper has been ordered to serve three months behind bars due to a probation violation.
The 41-year-old MC, born Michael Tyler, was released from a Louisiana prison in 2010 after serving six years for sexual battery and extortion. He will return to jail on May 14, according to The Advocate.
On Monday, state District Judge Tony Marabella added the extra time as a condition of Mystikal’s five-year probation in the extortion case as a result of his arrest in February on a misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse battery.
“It was an unfortunate incident between two people who have cared a lot about each other for 10 years,” said Roy Maughan Jr., Mystikal’s attorney.
Mystikal and the victim are described as domestic partners. They have two children together.

Dr. Conrad Murray is headed to jail.
The 58-year-old physician was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday. (Earlier this month, Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the case of Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death.)
Delivering the sentence in a Los Angeles courtroom, Judge Michael E. Pastor denied Murray’s defense team’s request for probation; “Dr. Murray abandoned his patient,” said Pastor. “This is not a simple one-off occurrence.”
The Judge went on to call Murray’s “gross continuing deviation” from physician’s standards “a disgrace to the medical profession.”
He “is and remains dangerous,” said Pastor, who enforced the harshest sentence possible for Murray’s charges.
Jackson’s mother, Katherine, told reporters Monday she wanted her son’s former physician to serve the maximum amount of time in jail. “I don’t believe that he intended for Michael to die,” she said. “He was just taking a chance.”
Jackson, who was 50 at the time of his death, is survived by his children: Prince, 14, Paris, 13, and Blanket, 9.

Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the case of Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death.
Twelve jurors reached the verdict Monday in L.A. The seven men, five women jury had to decide whether Dr. Murray, 58, was criminally negligent in his use of the surgical anesthetic Propofol to treat Jackson’s insomnia and if it significantly contributed to his death at age 50.
The jury deliberated for more than seven hours Friday before telling the judge it had not reached a verdict. The jurors heard from 49 witnesses throughout the course of the 23 day trial, including Murray’s girlfriends and patients, Jackson’s former employees, investigators and medical experts for each side.
Prosecutor David Walgren told jurors Thursday that the evidence that Murray caused Jackson’s death is “overwhelming” and “abundantly clear.”
Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff argued no crime was committed, but that it was a negligence case that should instead be heard by the state medical board. The defense contends that Jackson self-administered the fatal overdose of drugs in his desperate search for sleep without Murray knowing about it.
“Conrad Murray left Prince, Paris and Blanket without a father,” prosecutor Walgren said of the pop icon’s daughter Paris, 13, and sons aged 14 and 9. “For them, this case doesn’t end today, or tomorrow. For Michael’s children, this case will go on forever, because they do not have a father. They do not have a father because of the actions of Conrad Murray.”

(CBS/WKMG/AP) ORLANDO, Fla. – Late Thursday, Orange County, Fla., corrections officials said they had “conducted a detailed recalculation of the projected release date” and that Casey Anthony would actually not be freed until July 17.
On Tuesday, Anthony was acquitted on first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter charges in the death of her daughter, Caylee. She was sentenced Thursday by Judge Belvin Perry to four years in prison for lying to police, but a court official announced shortly after that she’d be freed on Wednesday due to credit for time served and good behavior.
The new projected release date, July 17, will be her 1,007th day in jail.
When she is released, the 25-year-old Anthony must decide whether to return to a community in which many onlookers long ago concluded that she’s a killer, or to a home strained by her defense attorneys’ accusations of sexual abuse.

Singer-songwriter Anthony Stokes has filed suit against John Legend, claiming that the Grammy-winning ivory tickler listened to his demo tape and modeled a song after one of his tracks.
The suit, filed in New Jersey, claims that Legend watched Stokes give a performance at UNC in 2004. Following the gig, Stokes gave Legend his demo tape with the promise that he would listen to it, but never heard back.
But in 2006, Stokes heard the song “Maxine’s Interlude” off of Legend’s Once Again and realized that it ripped off his track “Where Are You Now?”
Stokes is suing Legend for unspecified damages and is attempting to block Legend from selling the track.

Casey Anthony was ordered to spend four years in jail for lying to investigators on Thursday (July 7) at the Orange County Courthouse in Orlando, Fla.
But the 25-year-old mother of Caylee Anthony will be released next Wednesday (July 13) due to credit for time served and good behavior, according to the court.
Casey, who was found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, was, however, convicted of four misdemeanor count of providing false information to law enforcement.
Judge Belvin Perry handed down the maximum sentence of one year in jail for each counts, along with a $4,000 fine. But he explained Casey would be able to get out early since she has already spent nearly three years behind bars.
